22 – Today’s Car Market

New Normal?

The car market today feels confusing for a reason, it’s being pulled in multiple directions at once. On one hand, prices have come down from the extreme highs seen during the pandemic, but they’re still well above historical norms. New cars are averaging around $50,000, and even as inventory improves, affordability remains a major challenge for buyers. At the same time, interest rates are still elevated, which means monthly payments remain high even if sticker prices stabilize. The result is a market that looks “normal” on the surface but still feels expensive in practice.

The used car market is where things get even more unusual. Traditionally, buying a slightly used vehicle was the most cost effective move, but that gap has narrowed significantly. In many cases, used cars are still priced high due to limited supply and strong demand, especially as new car prices push more buyers into the used market. While some segments like older EVs or certain luxury vehicles are seeing price declines, others like reliable budget cars and trucks remain expensive and competitive. This has created a strange dynamic where the “best value” isn’t always obvious anymore.

Another major shift is the rise of electric vehicles and how they’re impacting pricing across the market. EV prices are becoming more competitive. A wave of electric vehicles is expected to increase used inventory as leases begin to end, potentially driving prices down further. At the same time, external factors like fuel prices and global events are influencing demand, pushing more consumers to consider alternatives to traditional gas powered cars. Overall, the car market isn’t broken, but it’s in transition, and that’s what makes it feel so unpredictable.

Are you buying, selling, or waiting it out in this market?
